Pediatric Associates remembers Mike Dickens, MD, who passed away on February 18, 2025 for his outstanding contribution to the health of children. Dr. Dickens joined Pediatric Associates in 1978, soon after it was founded and cared for children in our community until his retirement in 2013. He is remembered for his thoroughness, his wisdom, and his leadership. He served in many leadership roles including as President of the Virginia Pediatric Society and the Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics for three years in the 1990s; on three national committees of the American Academy of Pediatrics including the Committee on Ambulatory Care; and as an AAP representative to the White House in support of the Clinton Health Plan initiative in 1993/1994. Additionally, Martha Jefferson Hospital awarded him the prestigious Arthur Bender Award for Clinical Excellence in 2002, for his contributions to quality medical care. He joined Dr. Ford and numerous other local doctors, nurses and volunteers on trips to Haiti to care for children at the Robert Ford Haitian Orphanage and School. A scholar, a doctor, a historian, a leader in his church, a friend, a husband, a father and grandfather, Dr. Dickens had many roles and will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.
