In 1973, pediatricians Dr. Peter Houck, Dr. Elsa Paulsen, and Dr. Robert Selden embarked on a journey to fill a void within their community. They recognized a profound need for a camp that catered to children and teenagers with medical needs and their siblings, and thus, Camp Holiday Trails (CHT) was born. Fast forward to today, and CHT has touched the lives of more than 10,000 campers, providing them with an unforgettable experience amidst nature and camaraderie.
CHT is nestled on over 70 acres of picturesque land just outside of Charlottesville, Virginia. Its mission is to offer inclusive and adaptable access to the great outdoors, ensuring that every child can experience the magic of camp, regardless of their medical condition. As we eagerly anticipate the release of the summer 2024 overnight camp dates by the end of September, let’s explore what makes Camp Holiday Trails so special.
- A Diverse Range of Activities: CHT offers a wide array of activities that cater to various interests and abilities. From archery to horseback riding, challenge course to messy art, campers have the opportunity to explore their passions and try new things. Nature exploration, drama, music, athletics, and more are all part of the adventure.
- Cabin Life: Campers live in cozy cabins with five other campers and two dedicated counselors. This close-knit environment fosters friendships, builds resilience, and provides a sense of belonging. It’s a place where memories are made and lifelong friendships are formed.
- Safety First: CHT boasts a full-time medical team that is responsible for campers’ health and well-being. Their presence ensures that every child can enjoy every minute of camp in a safe and supportive environment. Parents can rest easy knowing their children are in capable hands.
- Partnerships and New Sessions: Exciting news is on the horizon as CHT is set to introduce new sessions and partnerships for the summer of 2024. These additions promise even more opportunities for campers to grow, learn, and have fun.
Camp Holiday Trails is more than just a summer camp; it’s a place where dreams come true, where challenges are overcome, and where friendships flourish. With its unwavering dedication to inclusivity, a diverse range of activities, and a team of caring professionals, CHT continues to provide a transformative experience for children and teens with medical needs and their siblings.
