Sunday June 23 was the last day when our pediatricians were responsible for all of the newborns at Martha Jefferson Hospital while on call. It has been bittersweet to see the end of an era, and we are all reflecting upon the moments that have shaped us, and the incredible nurses and obstetricians whom we have had the honor of working with while they put all of their hearts into some of the most important days in families’ lives for over 50 years. Now we are looking forward to how this change means being able to better focus on taking the best care of our patients in the office. Without the newborn nursery taking up a large portion of the mornings and an extended dinner hour, we are able to have more capacity for daytime and early evening office visits. This has the biggest impact on the weekends when a smaller number of providers are here for urgent care. This shift to more visits earlier in the day allows us to maintain the same number of weekend visits earlier on when families call with sick children. Over the past several years pharmacy hours have been significantly limited especially on weekends, and we have hated keeping sick children up past their bedtimes for a late appointment and then not be able to pick up prescriptions until the next day. Beginning Saturday, June 29 our updated weekend schedule will provide increased capacity for visits earlier in the day without limiting the number of children seen; just at times that are much more convenient for families. As always, call if you have concerns about a sick child to schedule a visit! Our nurses are here an hour before the first visits each day to answer your calls and help make appointments.
